The New York Public Library (NYPL) is one of the greatest libraries in the world. As a Fordham student you can get an NYPL library card free either online or by visting a branch library.

NYPL has 2 catalogs: CATNYP for its Research Libraries and LEO for its 85 branch libraries in Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx. Both are accessible from its website www.nypl.org

The Research Libraries are organized into 4 major centers:

  • Humanities and Social Sciences Library : 5th Avenue and 42nd Street
  • Science, Industry and Business Library (SIBL) : 188 Madison Avenue
  • Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture : 515 Malcolm X Blvd.
  • Library for the Performing Arts : Lincoln Center

Library Consortia NYATLA

Fordham belongs to several regional library consortia: Westchester Academic Library Directors' Organization (WALDO) and New York Area Theological Library Association (NYATLA). Members of the Fordham community may visit these libraries upon presentation of a Fordham ID and use materials on site.

Metro Referral Cards

This Metro Card does not let you ride the subway but it does gain you admittance to a non-public library in New York City not belonging to the two consortia. Metro (Metropolitan New York Library Council) is a library organization of public and non-public libraries in New York City and Westchester County. Fordham students may obtain a Metro Referral Card from a Reference librarian to gain access to materials that are not held by Fordham or the public library.

There are two types of Metro cards:

  • Title Referral Card (yellow card) allows access to a specific Metro library for a one-time visit to access a specific title that is not held by Fordham or the public library. This is the most commonly used card.
  • Subject Referral Card (blue card) allows access to a specific Metro library whose particular collection is strong in the area of your research for a limited period of time.
