Title:  Hopothle Mico.
Catalog #:  3
Category:  Portraits
Description:  1790. 5 X 3 7/8. Pencil. Inscribed on back: Hopothle (?) Mico or / the Talasee (?) King / N York July 1790.
Note:  A sensitive and superbly drawn portrait of a member of the Creek nation. This Native American was most likely present at the signing of the Treaty of New York on August 7, 1790, which was the first treaty between the Creek nation and New York. Hopothle Mico is depicted wearing a military coat and the insignia of a Brigadier General. Such coats were often called “chiefs coats,” because government officials frequently presented them to important Native American leaders to garner their support.
